MGGS Student Sporting Excellence - Madison Deniz

MGGS Year 9 Student Madison (Madi) Deniz represented Victoria in the Under 15 Girls Commbank Emerging Matildas Championships over the Easter Holidays.

Madi played 7 matches across the Tournament and had a very successful tournament personally and her team performed very well.

When asked about her highlight from the tournament, Madi explained that “my main highlight from the tournament was scoring two goals against South Australia. It was a fun game for me, playing under lights and something I will remember from the tournament. It was good to help the team win in an important game and to perform well against a strong opposition”.

Madi had the opportunity of playing against the best Under 15 girls from all states across Australia and had exposure to international opposition, playing against the Under 15s Vietnam team.  Madi described that her expectations leading into the Championship were “that I would be playing against a high level of competition and a lot of talented players from across Australia. I knew it was going to be a tough, close tournament”.

The Victorian side won 5 of their 7 matches, finishing 5th out of 14 teams. Madi scored 4 goals, finishing equal second highest goal scorer in her team. Madi was happy with her performances and explained that “as a team we played well, just missing out on the semi-finals. Overall, we came fifth and while we didn’t win, it was still a great experience”.

Having exposure to such high-level competition provided Madi with plenty of learnings to take away from the tournament. Madi commented that “One thing I learnt from the Championships is how differently each team played. We learnt to adjust our game depending on who we were playing and how they played. Some matches were faster, while others were more physical, so we had to constantly adapt to each game style and opposition. This made every game different to play in”.

The whole Artemis Community is very proud of Madi’s achievements to date – with our Head of Sport, Mr. Anthony Bruhn commenting “Madi has been an absolute star at MGGS throughout her three years at the school. She was a standout in Junior AFL and now cemented her place on the wing in the Senior AFL team. But it’s on the soccer pitch that Madi really shows her class where she has scored multiple goals in the 2026 Emerging Matildas Championship carnival”.

“Whilst playing at such a high representative level, Madi has always played GSV Soccer and as you’d expect – dominated. Her commitment to MGGS and GSV has been outstanding which really showcases to all students that playing for MGGS whilst being in a Rep program is possible and worthwhile. Amazing Madi – you’re a star!”

Madi is ambitious about her Soccer going forward, commenting “my goals are to keep improving as a soccer player so I can one day hopefully play professionally, maybe even make the Matildas!”

A huge congratulations to Madi for competing so well in the tournament!

Everyone at MGGS is excited to follow and support Madi with her soccer journey going forward!
