MGGS Swimming – Term 1 Success, Culture, and the Rise of a Team
The Melbourne Girls Grammar School (MGGS) GSV Swim Team has once again delivered an outstanding Term 1 campaign, continuing a steady rise in performance, culture and depth under Head Coach Brad Harris.
While the ultimate goal of a podium finish has been building over recent years, 2026 marked a major breakthrough, with MGGS finishing 3rd overall at the GSV Finals Evening, a result that reflects not only performance on the night, but the strength of a program built over time.
Launching the Mission – More Than Just Swimming
Term 1 began with a clear purpose: the 2026 GSV Podium Mission.
This was launched through the GSV Swim Clinic in January, highlighted by the involvement of Australian swimming legend Nicole Livingstone, who delivered a simple but powerful message:
“Success would come through the team, especially relays”.
This philosophy became a cornerstone of the program.
By Finals Night, every MGGS relay team had qualified, with the Year 10 and Year 11 relays leading the charge, showcasing not just talent, but connection, trust and execution under pressure.
Performance Highlights and School Records
The results speak for themselves.
MGGS swimmers delivered across both individual and relay events, contributing to a historic night that included multiple school records:
Year 10 Breaststroke – Jo Lou (35.53), breaking a 1999 School record held by T.Bond
Year 12 Freestyle – Arabella Tomlinson (26.86) from 2024 by A.Skinner former Swim Captain.
Year 10 Freestyle Relay – 1:52.15 (J.Lou, G.Hudson, G.Skinner, E.Phillips)
Year 10 Medley Relay – 2:06.30 (G.Skinner, J.Lou, G.Hudson, E.Phillips)
Year 11 Medley Relay – 2:15.83 (A.Larke, O.Hodges, J.Hume, N.Wells)
These performances highlight not only the hard work and dedication from the individuals but also the growing depth of the Artemis Aquatics Swimming Program.
A special mention also goes to Jo Lou and Arabella Tomlinson, who were selected in the 2026 Representative Swimming Team, a testament to their consistency and high performance throughout the season.
Building from the Ground Up
One of the most significant developments this season has been the growth of the Artemis Aquatics program.
The House Swimming Carnival reached an all-time high in both participation and performance, serving as a key platform for talent identification. More swimmers are now using this event to showcase their development, race competitively, and engage with the sport in a meaningful way.
Coach Brad Harris noted:
“The growth of Artemis Aquatics has played a huge role in our success. We’re seeing more swimmers training consistently, improving their skills, and bringing that confidence into competition.”
Looking ahead, there is a strong focus on developing younger swimmers (Years 5–6) to ensure long-term sustainability and continued success.
Coaching Approach – Process Over Outcome
Behind the results lies a clear coaching philosophy focused on:
- Process-driven improvement over outcome-based thinking
- Emphasis on relays and team contribution
- Development of technical skills and race awareness
- Building athlete ownership through goal setting and reflection
Swimmers were encouraged to:
- Understand their starting point.
- Embrace challenges as part of growth.
- Train with intent through Intensity, Focus and Feel.
This holistic approach ensured that success was measured not just in medals but also in development, resilience, and enjoyment of the sport.
Looking Ahead
With a podium finish now achieved at the GSV Finals Evening, the message is clear:
MGGS is no longer chasing; they are competing for Podium Finish at GSV Division Championships
The foundation has been built through:
- Strong junior recruitment
- A growing club environment
- Clear team identity
- Athlete-driven culture
