Selected to compete against the nation’s best school-aged swimmers, Jo proudly represented Victoria in a week that celebrated not only high-performance sport but also teamwork, resilience, and state pride.
Reflecting on the experience, Jo described this year’s championships as one of the most memorable she has attended. A dedicated opening ceremony brought together athletes from a range of sports, creating a genuine celebration of state representation. The Team Vic state chant and the shared experience with athletes from across Victoria fostered an immediate sense of unity and pride that remained throughout the week.
Beyond the pool, athletes participated in an experience day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where they toured the iconic venue and learnt about its rich history and significance in Australian sport. The visit provided an opportunity to appreciate the broader impact of elite sporting achievement and the role it plays in inspiring future generations.
In the pool, Jo demonstrated exceptional determination and resilience. One of the standout moments of the championships came during an afternoon in which she raced four 50-metre freestyle events: the heats, the final just two hours later, followed by two relay events. Despite the demanding schedule and accumulated fatigue, Jo produced faster performances with each swim, improving from 27.56 seconds to an outstanding 27.06 seconds across the session.
Looking back on the championships, Jo reflected that the experience reinforced an important lesson, that success is measured by far more than times and medals. Representing Victoria strengthened her appreciation for the values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, while providing an unforgettable opportunity to compete on the national stage.
