MGGS Sporting Excellence - Marie-Jeanne Purwanto

Year 12 MGGS Student, Marie-Jeanne (MJ), competed at the Park & Pipe Junior World Championships in Calgary from 23 February to 7 March 2026. This was an amazing experience, and MJ is very grateful for the opportunity to represent Australia at such a high-level World Championships.

Competing in a strong field of over 40 girls from more than 18 countries, she achieved outstanding results across three snowboard disciplines:

Women’s Snowboard Halfpipe – 11th

Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle – 29th

Women’s Snowboard Big Air – 22nd

MJ was asked about her expectations of the World Championship and commented that “I didn’t go in with strict expectations, although I do sometimes put pressure on myself to perform well. My focus was more on giving my best effort and staying present in the moment. I think that’s what mattered most in the end”.

MJ had the opportunity of competing in a new event during the Championships and felt happy with how she performed, mentioning that the new event “pushed me outside my comfort zone in a really good way. I enjoyed that challenge. Overall, I’m happy because I gave it my all and left with a stronger mindset and more experience to build on”!

Competing in such a high level of competition in a foreign country brings about a brilliant opportunity to experience new scenarios and make lifelong memories. MJ articulated that “One of the biggest highlights was being able to reconnect with friends from all over the world and meet new people through the sport. It felt special to be surrounded by such a big global community. Another important part was being able to see my own gaps in performance more clearly, which gave me direction for future training. I left with not just lots of new memories, but also with a better understanding of what I need to improve and how I can grow as an athlete moving forward”!

MJ is ambitious with what the future holds for her snowboarding and importantly has developed such a passion for the sport that she hopes to hold close to her once she completes her schooling at Melbourne Girls Grammar. Regarding her future goals, MJ expressed that:

“My goals include progressing toward World Cups and eventually the Olympics, but more than results, my passion is really the sport itself. I want to use snowboarding as a space for expression, where I can ride with individuality and style. I’d also love to keep pushing into different areas like street and backcountry riding. One of my biggest dreams is to film a project or movie that shares that love for snowboarding and shows the creativity and freedom that comes with it”.

All the MGGS Artemis Community is very proud of MJ’s Snowsports journey so far, especially our Head of Snowsports – Georgia von Einem who commented:

“MJ’s success in Snowboarding began 10 years ago when she joined MGGS Snowsports in year 2. At just 7 years old, she broke into the competition world placing just 13th in Snowboard GS before taking out the gold medal just one year later. Since then, MJ has dominated in Interschools Snowsports seeing herself on the podium at both the state and national level every year since. MJ has claimed the Victorian State Champion, eight times in her Snowboarding career, across Snowboard GS, Snowboard Cross & Slopestyle”.

“On top of these incredible results, MJ is a dedicated and hard-working student athlete off the snow, constantly in the gym and attending physical preparation. Her contribution over the last 10 years has no doubt made her a phenomenal leader and has supported her peers whilst vice-captain in 2025 and captain in 2026”.

“MJ has brought an incredible energy and motivation to the Snowsports program, and we are so excited to see where her talents take her”.

Everyone at Artemis and the broader MGGS community are proud of MJ and wish her all the best with her Snowboarding.
