What an AMAZING weekend at the Head of Schoolgirls Regatta for the Melbourne Girls Grammar community!
Melbourne Girls Grammar School (MGGS) delivered a remarkable performance at the regatta, with the School’s First VIII, The Merton, crowned champions in a historic victory on the Barwon River.
The win marks only the third time in the School’s history that MGGS has claimed the coveted First VIII A Final title — and the first since 2012 — making it a milestone moment for the School’s rowing program.
Across the three-day regatta, our 134 rowers showcased exceptional determination and teamwork against the state’s strongest schoolgirl rowing programs. MGGS finished second on the overall medal tally with an outstanding 15 medals, including six gold, three silver and six bronze.
Recognised as the largest all-female school rowing event in the Southern Hemisphere, the Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta brings together more than 2,000 competitors and is a cornerstone of girls’ sport in Australia.
Under the impeccable leadership of Alistair Matthews, Tom Sanders, Ellie Tomanovits and Amelia Kogler, alongside our dedicated team of rowing coaches, MGGS crews have trained consistently, intensely and with unwavering focus throughout the season.
We extend our sincere thanks to our dedicated rowing staff and coaches, the MHRC, Soana and Michael Ross, and our fantastic parent helpers for their support in making HOSG such a memorable event. A special mention goes to the Merton Army for their incredible energy and unwavering support as they cheered our finalists down the Barwon.
MGGS now turns its attention to the upcoming Australian Rowing Championships at Lake Barrington, where the First VIII (The Merton) and Year 10A (The Gough Family) will represent the School on the national stage.
GO MELBOURNE! 💙
